Upgrades will give you a an increase in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of the item upgrader kit by +3. Each upgrade also boosts the random substatus.
The more modernized gear generally has a more value in trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or has a high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the requirement to roll to get a perfect version.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every few weeks to keep your equipment up-to-date.
