What is the USMLE?
The USMLE, short for the United States Medical Licensing Examination, is the required exam for international students aspiring to practice medicine in the United States. This exam consists of three parts.
Ownership of the USMLE
The USMLE is jointly owned by two entities:
Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB):
Represents state medical boards responsible for issuing medical licenses.
National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME):
Develops and administers the USMLE examinations.
