A pneumatic actuated butterfly valve operates through the combined work of a butterfly valve and a pneumatic actuator. Here's how it works:
1. The design of the butterfly valve consists of a disc or vane that is mounted on a central shaft within the valve body. The disc is positioned in the center of the pipe and which helps it rotate freely to control the flow of fluid.
2. The pneumatic actuator which is attached to the valve and it is powered through compressed air. It typically consists of a piston which is housed within a cylinder. When compressed air is gets into the actuator, it creates pressure which then moves the piston inside the cylinder.
3. The actuator is connected to the valve shaft in a way that allows the movement of the piston to rotate the shaft and thus the disc of the valve.
4. When compressed air gets into the actuator, it them noves the piston, which later in turn rotates valves shaft and valves get opened in disc perpendicular to the flow direction. Thereby allows fluid to pass through the valve.
5. Conversely, when the supply of compressed air get stopped or reversed, the piston moves in the opposite direction. This rotation of the shaft causes the disc to return to its original position, closing the valve and stopping the flow of fluid.
6. The operation of the pneumatic actuated butterfly valve can be controlled by handwheel, electrically, or through a programmable control system, allowing for precise control over the flow of fluid.
