Upgrades will give you a boosts in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of the item upgrade by +3. Each upgrade item also increases an unspecified substat.
The more modernized gear generally has a greater value for trade as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or has a high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). Upgrades are less useful for those with higher variance due to the requirement to roll the perfect version.
